CHRIS Morgan said he is excited about helping Falmouth’s pack develop after taking up a coaching role with the Eagles.

The Cornish Pirates captain has been confirmed as the Tribute Cornwall/Devon League club’s forwards coach for next season.

Morgan takes over the role from Phil Angove, who departed the Recreation Ground at the end of the season to join up with Camborne. Graham Whitmore remains as head coach.

Speaking to the Packet, Morgan who recently represented the famous Barbarians side after an impressive season at the Mennaye said he cannot wait to get started with the coaching.

The 33-year-old said: “I’m really looking forward to the job as I know it is a nice club with good guys.

“Phil and Graham have done a great job over the last couple of years and I know I have huge boots to fill following in the footsteps of Phil.

“I know the team has ambitions to move up to the Western Counties League and I would like to help them achieve that.

“Coaching is something I’ve always been interested in doing and I feel I need to develop myself as a coach, so this is a fantastic opportunity for me to develop and see where the road takes me.”

Morgan will couple the coaching with playing duties at the Pirates.

The flanker said he does see there being any issues with juggling both jobs next season.

He said.: “If anything, it might give me a bit of perspective as the guys I’ll be coaching will be coming after a full day of work, which shows how dedicated they are.”

It will not be the first time Morgan has coached Falmouth as he helped out at the club for the second half of the 2012/13 campaign.

Back then he worked alongside current Eagles chairman Neville Curnow, who was impressed with Morgan’s style.

“He was very professional,” Curnow said.

“Obviously with Phil Angove leaving for Camborne, we found ourselves with a big hole to fill within our coaching set-up.

“Chris has helped us out before and when started thinking about replacing Phil, we decided to give him a call and I am absolutely delighted he has agreed to become our forwards coach.”

He is also hoping having the Pirates captain around the ground will give the squad a boost, from senior level down to the young players representing the Eagles.

Curnow said: “Chris’s name was put forward by some of the players while we were searching for Phil’s replacement as they liked it when he coached a couple of years ago.

“It should also help create a bit of buzz around the club and perhaps attract new players to us.”
