FAMILIAR faces will be returning to the Penryn hot seat after the club confirmed Paul Trevaskis and Dave Thomas will be joint-head coaches next season.

The experienced duo have both previously coached at Borough with Trevaskis leaving the role at the end of the 2013/14 campaign, having also played for the club’s first team in the past.

In April, Russell Lawrance stepped down from the club’s top job less than a year after taking the reins and in the same month his assistant Marek Churcher confirmed he was heading to Redruth.

Sub-committee chairman Alan Mitchell hinted in a statement the duo will probably not be the only coaches involved at the Western Counties West club during the next campaign.

Mitchell said: “Both have put together a coaching structure for this season that will hopefully take Penryn forward for the future seasons to come.

“Young coaches who have expressed their wish to develop their coaching skills have been included in the new structure at the club for the coming season.

“With the introduction of league rugby at second XV level this season, this may be the ideal opportunity for coaches of all levels to get involved in senior rugby at the club.”

Back in 2012, Trevaskis and Thomas held the same position together at Borough following the club’s relegation from the South West One Division, which prompted Adryan Winnan to resign as coach.

Trevaskis, whose son Ben is currently part of the line-up at Borough, stood down from the position in 2014 due to work commitments getting in the way of rugby.

He has had other spells in charge of Penryn while Thomas has also coached Falmouth and St Ives, along with winning the 1991 County Championship crown with Cornwall.

Along with this final, Thomas led the Duchy to three other finals at Twickenham, but ended on the losing side of the dugout in 1989, 1992 and 2013.

The former teacher was in charge of Cornwall in 2008 when they won the inaugural County Championship Shield.

Since moving away from duties with the Cornish senior side two years ago, Thomas has run a series of coaching sessions for youth players on behalf of the county’s RFU.

On June 30, a players meeting at the Memorial Ground will give squad members their first chance to talk with Trevaskis and Thomas.

Following the meeting, which is open to all current, former and new players, training will take place with regular sessions to continue throughout the season on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
