A total of 12 Penryn RFC teams are in action this weekend, writes Ben Gilby.

The first XV welcome Wessex to The Memorial Ground in another round of Cornwall/Devon League action, in a game which was originally scheduled to be played in early January.

The game is significant for both sides.

After Saltash played two games last weekend, scoring over 160 points in the process, the Borough now stand in third place in the league table as the chase to secure a top two finish and promotion to Western Counties West looks to be reaching a hugely exciting climax.

'The Ashes' are in the quarter-finals of the RFU Vase on Saturday, but the other two promotion chasers are in league action. Wellington travel to Plymstock Albion Oaks and Honiton make the journey to Lanner.

Wessex's campaign has been badly impacted by the weather since Christmas - a run which has seen them play just three times since December 16.

Consequently, the Exeter based side have up to four games in hand on the teams around them in the table. Standing nine points adrift of safety at the present time, Wessex will be buoyed by a recent 41-12 win over Pirates Amateurs, the team everyone in the bottom three are chasing.

Their other wins this season came against Torrington (26-24) and an excellent 19-17 win at seventh placed Withycombe.

Wessex came agonisingly close to gaining a superb victory when they hosted Borough earlier in the season.

Andrew Alderman's try tied the scores up at 24-24, but his attempt to win the game failed as the conversion attempt missed.

There was still time for Borough to take the points, but the wind blew Mitchell Vague's penalty attempt on to the post.

Kick off is 2:30pm, but there's a superb Penryn v Falmouth Duchy League derby clash at the Memorial Ground starting at 12:30pm - so why not make a day of it supporting The Borough!

As mentioned above, Penryn Saracens host local rivals Falmouth in the Duchy League in a game which kicks off at 12:30pm. This is the fourth time that the teams have met this season, but the first to take place at the Memorial Ground.

All previous three matches have seen Penryn run out winners - 54-12 in the League in November, 24-17 in the Boxing Day clash, and 26-0 in the Duchy Cup on January 6.

Going into the game, the Saracens stand in fifth place, with five wins from their ten games so far.

Depending on other results, a win could see Borough go as high as third.

Falmouth IIs produced a great performance in their last game against Wadebridge Camels and the men from the Recreation Ground will be determined to gain the league points on Saturday, so the Saracens will have to be at their best.

PenFal Colts take on Liskeard-Looe Colts at Falmouth RFC in a game which kicks off at 12:30pm.

This is the Colts' first game since February 10 due to poor weather conditions, and the third attempt at trying to play the side from Lux Park this season.

PenFal will be looking to build on their great showing against Saltash last time out.

Sunday sees another busy day of action with our club hosting the Cornwall U13s Festival, so please consider coming down to support this fantastic festival of rugby and support our boys.

The U7s to U12s are all away to Lankelly-Fowey with each of the games kicking off at 11am at Lankelly Lane. The U14s are also in Cornwall Festival action. The U15s and U16s are without a game.
