An award-winning Cornish cheese production company have received The Kings Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development.

Lynher Dairies, the maker of the iconic Cornish Yarg cheese and the world champion cheese Cornish Kern, has been awarded The Kings Award for Enterprise for its achievements in sustainable development.

Recommended by the Prime Minister and approved by His Majesty the King, the dairy at Ponsanooth in mid-Cornwall was selected as a ‘shining example’ of a proactive and resilient rural business living in the 21st century.

Dairy owner Catherine Mead said: “We are truly honoured to be recognised with such a distinguished accolade.

“Cornish food already carries recognition nationally and internationally for its quality and provenance and this award helps that reputation to expand laterally, making sustainability an additional key pillar for all Cornish food producers.”

With Cornwall being a champion of Lynher’s cheeses as well as the loyalty of the customers – from restaurants to delis and kitchen tables – has been ‘essential’ to the dairy’s success.

“For a rural business to succeed, it is vital that the community support us, and we support the community. This award has demonstrated that what we do has a positive circular impact on us all,” said Catherine.

“A dynamic and progressive business is an exciting place to work. Being recognised as an outstanding, versatile business with strong values where people can build a fulfilling career is the most valuable outcome of receiving this reward.”

The King previously visited the Ponsanooth dairy in 2022 where he was given a tour of the award-winning Yarg cheese dairy and met with staff members before he joined a discussion with specialist cheese makers.

In April, the Packet reported that Lynher had won numerous accolades in this year’s British Cheese Awards winning three gold and one silver.
