The last surviving British gold medallist from the 1948 London Olympic Games, Falmouth resident David Bond, has died.

Mr Bond, who took gold in a Swallow two-man Olympic class keelboat used solely for the 1948 Games, passed away peacefully at home at the end of March shortly before his 91st birthday.

He claimed his medal with helm Stewart Morris on the last occasion the Olympic Games were staged in the UK prior to 2012, winning by a tight margin in the last race at the so-called post-war "Austerity Games."

The two never sailed together again after their 1948 triumph, but their feats were relived last year when Mr Bond met with Britain's modern day sailing hero Ben Ainslie in Falmouth during the Royal Yachting Association's Sail for Gold exhibition at the National Maritime Museum.

A spokesperson for the RYA said: "It is with great sadness that the RYA has learned of the passing of David Bond.

"We would like to convey our deepest sympathies to his family and friends."
