Flora Day may not be going ahead in Helston this year but one artist has made sure the spirit of the day can still be enjoyed.

Alice Hole, who is well known locally for her realistic views of Cornwall and in particular her home town of Helston, has produced a series of colouring sheets that can be printed out and coloured in.

Helston Flora Day Association is now encouraging children to colour them in ready for Flora Day and perhaps even make a trail of pictures posted in windows through the town on May 8, when the event should have taken place.

Sharing the sheets on Facebook, a spokesperson said: "What a fabulous resource for the children of Helston. Maybe houses could put them in their windows on Helston Flora Day?"

There are four colouring sheets to choose from, showing different Flora Day scenes of the Midday Dance, the Children's Dance, the Hal an Tow, as well as a lily of the valley, the floral symbol of the day, worn by all dancers.

Alice said: "If you or your children are feeling like you’d like something creative to do, I have produced some Flora Day colouring sheets that are free to download and print from my website.

"Sadly Flora Day has been cancelled this year due to the current circumstances.

"Hopefully, these colouring sheets will go a little way towards cheering up those missing the festivities.

"Please share if you know someone who’d like to have a go!"

The sheets can be downloaded for printing from Alice's website alicehole.co.uk/colouring-sheets

Friday, May 8 should have seen Helston transformed with flowers, music and dancing for its annual feast day.

However, thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and lockdown restrictions, organisers were forced to cancel the event for one of only very few time times in history.
