A new fully plant-based eatery should soon be coming to central Falmouth.

The Sloth and Sparrow has recently signed a lease for a small premises just off Church Street, where the Rumbling Tum café was previously based.

It will soon open as Falmouth's only 100 per cent plant-based eatery, serving a mixture of plant-based street food, Sunday roasts and general comfort food.

The Sloth and Sparrow has been operating in the area for around two and a half years since launching as a mobile catering business from a gazebo.

The popular specialist eatery has since catered for Falmouth University, various festivals, markets, private events and pop-up supper clubs all around Cornwall. It has also held a resident slot cooking plant-based Sunday roasts in Falmouth's Courtyard Deli last winter.

Founder Andre Joseph spent nearly eight years in Brighton cooking in various pubs and restaurants before creating Sloth and Sparrow three years ago.

Andre said: "A big part the reason I started Sloth and Sparrow catering and began cooking all of my favourite dishes was in recognition of the huge environmental impact I could make by choosing plant-based alternatives. "I also realised how stubborn I previously was towards changing my diet.

"Previously I was a massive meat eater whilst my wife Angie has always leaned towards a vegetarian diet.

"Around 2018 we decided to try Veganuary as we both wanted to stop contributing to the meat industry.

"Our choice to try a vegan diet stuck with us and we’ve been eating plant-based ever since.

"With every dish we create we always aim for the end product to be at least as good as its meat-based counterpart or better, and always made with plant-based products, no meat, no dairy, just plants!

The name ‘Sloth and Sparrow' came from the concept of showing "a side that is super productive, energetic and enthusiastic, but which is perfectly balanced with the other side that wants to eat a whole pizza for breakfast then go back to sleep". The name reflects "the way our bodies remind us about the importance of balance".

Andre says the new space is coming along nicely.

He added: "It's had a good scrub all over from top to bottom, a fresh coat of paint inside and out and some new flooring going in today.

"Our signage should be up in a few days.

"It’s all taking shape!

"Think bold international flavours and familiar textures and bright colours.

"We aim to challenge people's misconceptions about vegan food by producing high-quality, very accessible foods for all."

The new cafe should open in late October or early November, subject to a premises licence request being approved.
