A pub has been given planning permission to install glamping pods in its car park despite concerns about parking and traffic.

The Bucket of Blood pub in Phillack had applied to Cornwall Council to place the four pods on what was described as “unused overspill parking”.

The application went before the council’s west sub-area planning committee this morning with planning officers recommending approval.

Under the plans the four pods would be kitted out with a double bed and a small shower area.

Hayle Town Council had objected to the plans saying that the glamping pods would have a detrimental impact on neighbours.

Town councillor Anne-Marie Rance told the committee that the development “does not maintain or enhance the conservation area”.

She said that it went against the Hayle neighbourhood development plan and would “severely harm neighbourhood amenity”.

Cllr Rance said there were concerns that by reducing the number of parking spaces for the pub it would lead to more people parking on the road. She said that this was already making it hard for local residents to park outside their own homes.

She said that there was already an issue with the pub’s customers parking on the road and said that it was causing it to become a single track road and claimed it was causing a safety issue.

Lionel Pascoe, Cornwall councillor for the area said he had no issue with the pub itself but was concerned about the traffic issues.

Committee member Mike Thomas said that he could not support the application and recalled a recent application to turn a garden office into accommodation which was refused due to the impact on neighbouring properties. He said that the Bucket of Blood plans were similar.

He said that he did not consider noise to be an issue but said he felt that it was the wrong location for the pods.

However, a proposal to grant planning permission was agreed by the committee.
