Cornwall has seen a large fall in the number of new Covid cases in the past week, with some areas seeing figures more than halve.

It's after Cornwall and Isles of Scilly recorded a total of 3,132 cases during the seven days leading up to last Friday, August 27.

This was a whopping 1,309 fewer than had been recorded during the preceding week, when Cornwall was showing to have the highest case rate in the country, marking a 29.5% fall.

The case rate is now averaging 544.2 cases per 100,000 people, a significant fall on the 771.3 cases per 100,000 last Wednesday.

It means the map of Cornwall on the government dashboard has gone back down a level to purple, from the highest level of dark purple where it rose to in Saturday's weekend update, after the case rate rose above 800.

While Newquay is still recording high cases, the fall has been equally large, with the town going from a combined 344 weekly cases last Wednesday to 212 in the most recent seven days.

Its neighbouring areas have also seen a reduction, with St Columb Minor & Porth down from 156 to 102, and St Columb Major & St Mawgan down from 119 to 61.

Falmouth's cases have more than halved in a week, going from a combined 200 cases to 97 across its three clusters: Falmouth West & South (35, down 38), Falmouth East (31, down 34), Falmouth North (31, down 31).

Falmouth Packet:

It is just one town of many in Cornwall to see such a reduction, with the majority of clusters seeing falls.

One of the few exceptions is Padstow & St Issey, where cases have risen to 75, up 12 on the week before.

The map shows positive cases by 'Middle Super Output Area' - the name the government gives to the break-up of larger towns and groups of neighbouring towns and villages, with groupings covering a greater area than others.

The minimum population in each area is 5,000 and the average is 7,200.

Falmouth Packet:

Clusters are only shown when there are three or more new cases reported at any one time.

Anywhere with between zero and two cases shows white in order to "protect the privacy of individuals and prevent disclosure", the accompanying information states.
