A Cornwall man who made movie models for a number of Hollywood blockbusters will be setting up workshops to share his knowledge of the trade.

Martin Gaskell, who lives in Penryn, has worked on some of the biggest films of recent years including Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars, The Martian, Thor and James Bond.

After having moved to Penryn, Martin is now looking to share some of his know-how with like-minded people in the area.

Martin told The Packet: "I've been in the film industry for 37 years as a prop maker and special effects, and I've worked on a number of major feature films such as Bond, Star Wars, a lot of Ridley Scott films.

"I kind of do a little bit of anything and everything, I had a horse in the workshop a few weeks ago and a load of dead bodies to be burnt on a bonfire.

"But I do still take on a little bit of work.

"It's usually sci-fi or medieval stuff that's the main bread and butter, because you've got to make a lot of things for those.

"Present day stuff like James Bond, you might make an iron railing for a set or the odd gadget here and there.

"But it's usually stuff that you can't get easily, so medieval and sci-fi you have to make everything.

"I've taken a step back and I'm looking to set up a workshop and do some mould making courses for sculptors, crafty people and artists, to teach them a bit of mould making and casting and maybe some armature building.

"I'm coming up to 62 this year and I end up working away from home so much on films, as a lot of it is location work as well, so it was really just a way of capitalising on my experience and finding a way to make a living where I am and passing on some of the skills.

"Nowadays, the young people coming in use a lot of 3D modelling and printing where we always had to make everything by hand at one time, and so it'll be a way to make use of my skills and ease of working away from home twice a year."

With the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, Martin's plans have been slightly delayed, however he does say he'll be looking to get the workshops up and running from early next year.

There will also be craft and textile workshops with Dorcas Gibson, who specialises in upcycling and embroidery as well as her handmade art dolls inspired by sea nymphs, swans, historical and mythical creatures.
