Cornwall Council have responded to residents' pleas to take their safety concerns regarding a stretch of road in Helston seriously.

Residents living along Meneage Road in Helston have been pleading with Cornwall Council to act after a lollipop lady resigned citing up to ten near misses along the stretch of road.

Alison Sauvary, who left the post on November 26, had been in the job for four years, but said that over the past few weeks there had been ten incidents where she feared for her safety, including having to "literally jump out the way."

One of them left her with whiplash and needing to see a doctor, and she has received help from Victim Support as she felt nervous about returning afterwards.

The Packet put these concerns to Cornwall Council who have now comes out with a statement saying: "Our school crossing patrols carry out a vital service in helping children travel safely to school and reports of motorists driving in an unsafe manner and ignoring requests to stop is not acceptable.

"We are saddened to learn that a valued member of the school crossing patrol team has resigned as a result of inconsiderate drivers.

"Cornwall Council has commissioned Cormac to develop proposals to improve conditions for walking and cycling around Helston.

"Meneage Road is one of the areas being considered as part of these proposals."

However, plans for a crossing on the 'unsafe' road have reportedly been in the works for years, with various schemes across the years so far falling short of being actioned.

In May of 2019, two residents launched a petition for a crossing to be installed on Meneage Road and managed to gather over 560 signatures.

Then in December of 2020, former Cornwall and Helston Councillor John Martin claimed the location of a pedestrian crossing had been marked out and that he hoped to see it in place in early 2021, although said plans have, so far, not materialised.

In response to The Packet's previous article covering Alison Sauvary's resignation, one resident, going by the name 'Helston Mum' commented: "They promised a crossing a year ago but nothings happened.

"Let's hope they don't wait for someone to get injured or killed before the council do something."
