A coastguard rescue team had to move a man who had injured his back to shelter because of the wait time for an ambulance as Cornwall was so busy for jubilee weekend.

Mullion Coastguard rescue team were called to Lizard Point at 2.23pm yesterday to a man who had injured his back whilst on Lizard Point.

They had to use a stretcher to carry the injured man back up to the car park to wait for the ambulance. However the team was told because Cornwall was so busy at the time it didn't know when the ambulance would arrive.

They eventually had to move the casualty to the Lizard lighthouse for shelter to keep him safe whilst they waited for an ambulance. They were joined by coastguard rescue teams from Porthleven and Porthoustock who took it in shifts to look after the casualty whilst they waited for the ambulance.

Eventually the patient was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital,Treliske by air ambulance.

Posting on Facebook Mullion coastguard team said: "Team paged 2:13pm on May 30 to a male casualty who injured their back at Lizard Point.

"We used our stretcher to move the casualty up to the car park to wait for the ambulance, however with Cornwall being so busy at the moment they were unable to provide an arrival time. Eventually we had to move the casualty to Lizard Lighthouse for shelter whilst awaiting an ambulance.

"The casualty was recovered by Cornwall Air Ambulance who transported the casualty to Treliske.

"Many thanks to our flank teams Porthleven Coastguard Team and Porthoustock Coastguard Rescue Team who helped looking after the casualty on rotation.

"Also, many thanks to Lizard Lighthouse & Heritage Centre for providing shelter and refreshments whilst awaiting rescue."
