AN annual ploughing match in Cornwall raised an incredible £5,843 for charity.

The Stem Cell Unit at Treliske Hospital and Man Down (a men's mental health charity) are two charities that will benefit from the money raised by Helston & St Keverne YFC's charity ploughing match

The young farmers' club chose the Stem Cell Unit as ex club member Anna Old is a nurse at the hospital. The money is going towards a new stem cell harvester that is set to cost £75,000.

Man Down was chosen as many of the YFC members and their friends work long and lonely hours, and the group are passionate about encouraging each other to speak up and talk about any challenges they may be facing.

Helston & St Keverne YFC chairman, Owen Williams, said: "We are really pleased with the amount we raised, and it’s the most the ploughing match has raised in a very long time.

"We raised over £700 in sponsorship towards the day from very generous local businesses, and had pasties donated from Gear Farm for our judges, as well a hog roast donated from Helford Hog Roasts to sell during the afternoon. This helped us a lot.

"Donations of lots of different raffle and auction prizes resulted in the auction alone raising over £1,000.

"We were also able to set a date really early, thanks to the Bryant Family, who let us use their land at Higher Relowas Farm, Mawgan, which meant that we could advertise on social media a long time in advance, and open entries a few months earlier than usual.

"This really helped to increase the number of visitors, entries and in turn the amount of money that we raised."
