Wendron United progressed to the final of the Cornwall Senior Cup for the first time in their history as they defeated Saltash United of the Western League 3-1 at Burngullow Park.

Strikes Jack Stocker, Charlie Young and Cameron Wheat secured the win for underdogs Dron while Saltash reduced the deficit midway through the second half when Sam Farrant scored from just outside of the area.

Wendron United will play Falmouth Town in the final at St Austell's Poltair Park after Falmouth defeated Dobwalls 4-1 in the other semi-final.

With Saltash currently sitting fifth in the Western League, a division higher than South West Peninsula side Wendron it would have been expected for the Ashes to boss proceedings.

However, it was Wendron who grew into the game quickest and opened the scoring with just six minutes on the clock with a fantastic team goal.

Manager Michael O'Neill has Dron playing an appeasing brand of football and they showcased it brilliantly when Charlie Young and Cameron Wheat were involved with tika-taka one-touch football on the edge of the box.

The latter flicked the ball into the path of Jack Stocker who rifled home on the half volley from just outside the box to put the Dron in front.

Stocker had another sight on goal after 14 minutes when once again supplied by Wheat on the edge of the box. But his first time shot this time swerved the wrong side of the post.

Lucas Potts tried his luck with Dron's next attack but his low attempt was easy for Ryan Rickard to handle.

Saltash had barely troubled the Wendron backline and after 26 minutes they were two down after a howler from Ryan Rickard. The goalkeeper dallied on the ball and his hesitance was punished by Young who closed the number one down before eventually bundling the ball into the goal from close range.

It was the dream start for Wendron, who then had to show the other side of their game to deny Saltash in the coming minutes, former Plymouth Argyle prodigy Rubin Wilson flicked a header goalwards that Ethan Fearn comfortably claimed a minute shy of the half-hour.

Three minutes later Saltash caused havoc from a corner which somehow no one in a red and white striped shirt could scramble home before Fearn claimed again.

The Ashes possession and pressure would remain for the remainder of the half without ever threatening to break down Wendron as the scoreline stayed 2-0 heading into the interval.

Saltash began the second half the way they ended the first but as ever, Wendron's defence stood firm. Fred Walter, who played at centre back due to the injured Max Roberts, even blocked a half volley with his face as Dron pulled out all the stops to deny the opposition.

They were rewarded for their endeavours in the 50th minute when the Saltash glovemen produced another forgettable moment.

Rickard's lack of tempo cost him again, as Young closed down the keeper's heavy touch. The ball fell kindly to Wheat who from around 20 yards had the simple task of rolling the ball into the unguarded net to make it 3-0.

Saltash introduced Sam Davey for Rubin Wilson and the striker was immediately involved, forcing Fearn into two routine saves in a matter of minutes.

Meanwhile, injury-hampered Wendron had to adjust their makeshift backline as Walter exited after picking up a knock which resulted in Reece Carroll shifting to centre back from left-back and Luke Rundle filling his spot.

Rundle was instantly involved as Saltash thought he could have given away a penalty for a coming together with Tom Harris in the box, however, the referee deemed it as a shoulder to shoulder tackle on 66 minutes.

Saltash continued to pile bodies forward and got the goal their second-half push had probably deserved through Sam Farrant. The midfielder cooly finished from the edge of the box to grant the east Cornwall side a way back into the match with 70 minutes played.

This only gave Dron the incentive they needed to shut up shop at the back though with more heroic defending from Captain Scott Palmer in particular denying Saltash as Wendron held on for the victory.

So it will be Wendron United vs Falmouth Town for the third time this season at St Austell's Poltair Park on Easter Monday (April, 18)
