Weekend round-Up: What's been making the headlines this week

First published in Falmouth/Penryn

It is Friday and the sun is shining, so here at thepacket.co.uk it must be time for our round-up of what's been making the headlines this week.

First up, Tom Henderson, the 'removed' chief executive and founder of ShelterBox - and his son - have been arrested following a raid on his home as part of a charity fraud probe. Click here to read the story that is breaking today.

Falmouth Packet:

Next is the death of a man after a car went over a Newquay cliff (above) this morning. Read the full report here

Next is a look back in time at Falmouth under fire during WWII. As the town stands ready to host Armed Forces Day we bring you a spectacular set of pictures (below) from an upcoming exhibition at the fantastic National Maritime Museum. Click here to see all the pictures and read the story

Falmouth Packet:

Would you live on Gollywobbler Road? Nautical name suggestions for a new housing estate have left people mystified this week. Click here for more naming nonsense

Next it is a special report from Helen Dale about the shocking rise in food bank users. With people forced to sleep under discarded carpet or live in their cars, it’s little surprise that the Penryn and Falmouth Foodbank has seen a dramatic increase in the number of people seeking its help. Click here to read the report, and see how you can help

Next up it is Pendennis Point of View's Mike Truscott and his look back at the booming trade when the 'Klondykers' invaded Falmouth. Do you have a clue what 'Klondykers' are? Click here to find out.

Next! Vital traffic easing measure or Trojan horse to help facilitate the development of Bickland Water Road? Whichever it is, it will cost £2.2million for the Union Corner roundabout plan. Click here and make your own mind up!

Next, while not millions and billions, a married couple from Penzance are celebrating after scooping £389,921 on The National Lottery – and are already on the hunt for the perfect home to complete their Cornish dream. Read their story here

And that's your lot for now! But as always there is plenty of news, comment, gigs, guides, pictures, videos and more online at thepacket.co.uk. Covering Falmouth, Helston, West Cornwall, Truro, Camborne, Redruth (and to be honest the whole of Cornwall these days.)

I agree meerkats, there was clearly no respect for others whatsoever, I did not comment on the article, I did however read all the comments. I know I may place comments at times that others do not agree with or comments that with hind sight would have been better not placed, however, I would never encroach on someone else's grief and particularly with the discusting comments that were left on that article,
and to make matters worse it is clear someone has no remorse for their comments. Obviously the opinion of the majority counts for nothing.
Personally I've had enough of it.

In fact in my view it is cowardly, because if someone truly believed they were right in placing argument inciting comments and admit they are looking for argument on an article concerning tragic circumstances and to place disrespectful comments, then they should post under their own name and stand by their comments.

I see no one is allowed to comment on the windfarm story this morning, there are more and more stories we cant debate on, is this because of one moron that cant behave and spoils it for everyone, because the website never used to be like this. They should remove offensive comments not shut the whole story off from comments, and if they don't have time to monitor comments then ban the offender. I have noticed stories in the past that couldn't be commented on could be commented on with the West Briton website.

Completely agree with you Gill and meerkats. I read the comments.
I think guest01 loves attention in a sick way.

I doubt whether one person would stop comments being made unavailable on news reports generally but I do think that some stories should not be available for comment such as the one yesterday.I cant imagine the distress such comments would give relatives if read, and I think the Packet should be a little more responsible in what they allow to be commented on knowing what can and is written sometimes by people.
Packet response would be welcome.
As for guest01...... The mind boggles.

In the Packets defence, I expect they just hope that people would be responsible and respectful enough not to post comments on the article such as the one as yesterday, unless they know the family personally.

I love Falmouth Docks says...

Guest01 sounds like She/he is on illegal drugs to me, if she/he was better than any of us then i don't think she/he would feel the need to say so because anyone with any intelligence would not place a comment claiming to be better than anyone else, sounds like a childish comment, but of course I think it is just another attention seeking comment.
If she/he thinks being fair is condoning the illegal behaviour of someone who has already been convicted, I refer to the past stories and comments placed on them, and condoning violence in the sick way and that being fair is saying it is good to argue and incite argument on a story that does not need a stupid argument on it because it is a tragedy for someones family, then I think guest needs to grow up and live in the real world. If she/he thinks the comments are 'fair' then why are the comments removed. I think her/his comments are all about her/him and the attention she/he although I suspect it is a 'SHE' craves.
The paper obviously has no intention of banning her/his comments but in the space of time between the comments being posted and removed it is constantly giving people like the family of the tragedy the time to read the appalling distressing comments. How many times now have they removed comments placed by guest01. What happens if guest places unacceptable comments on every story will they shut down the comments on every story I wonder and lose readership. Might be a good idea as it will put a stop to the trolls games.

That comment is coming from guest who once said it was Gill that is deluded with a brain processing ailment.
Pot kettle.

I do try not to reply to guest01 ,s comments because i know that he/she loves the attention and the opportunity to start an argument. But when they comment on articles like this and make silly ,insensitive remarks ,without thinking of anyone but themselves i cant help it. As you said DCI Jen they have had their attentin fix for today ,so perhaps they will stay quiet , but i doubt it very much.

It was back under Wave yesterday, wonder how long before a new name crops up.

What I would like to see is more updates/follow ups of stories, like we have this week with the follow up of Tom Henderson and Shelter box.
