While some parts of the UK could be looking at a white Christmas for the first time in many years, don’t be placing any bets on Cornwall just yet.

The Met Office revealed this week that cold conditions in northern parts of the UK will lead to wintry showers over the weekend and frost on Monday, leading to the odds of a snow on Christmas Day being slashed – although probably still only on higher ground.

The same cannot be said for Cornwall however – but what exactly can we expected to see in terms of weather on Monday?

Christmas Day forecast

The current forecast from the Met Office shows a dry and relatively mild day for the time of year on December 25.

Temperatures are expected to be up around 10C or 11C, although it is likely to feel more like 7C or 8C.

There is a 50 per cent chance of rain showers overnight and earlier on into Christmas Day, although these are expected to clear by around 9am to give way to a dry day and evening, and into Boxing Day.

Those planning to take part in a Christmas Day or Boxing Day swim would still do well to take a warm coat and hat to put on afterwards, as while it may be dry it is likely to be cloudy on both Monday and Tuesday.

National picture

According to the Met Office, the UK can expect some unsettled weather in the run up to Christmas.

It said: “It remains generally rather unsettled for the weekend before Christmas, with further Atlantic frontal systems bringing rain and strong winds to parts of the UK. Rain will be heaviest in the west and northwest through the weekend, with any snow most likely confined to high ground in northern Scotland. Some central and eastern areas of the UK could remain mostly dry.

“There are still some uncertainties in the details of the forecast for Christmas Day.

“Christmas Day looks like being fairly unsettled in northern and western areas. Any showers in the north could be wintry with hail and thunder, but even here, any snow will be mainly on high ground.

“The south of the country will see the best of the drier and brighter conditions. While temperatures will be near normal for the time of year it will be a windy day for many meaning it will feel colder.

“Beyond Christmas Day further rain or showers and strong winds are likely for many, and again any sleet and snow will be mainly over the hills of Scotland, as is often the case in December.”
